Title: Towards the first complete sample of >50 GeV blazars
Abstract: We propose to acquire the intermediate resolution optical spectra of 23 blazars that have been recently detected above 50 GeV by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (in the 2FHL catalog) and lack redshift information. Our primary objective is to determine the redshift of these objects, or, at least, to constrain a lower limit. The redshift information will allow us to study the interaction of high-energy ($>$50 GeV) photons with the extra-galactic background light (EBL) allowing us to probe how the intensity of the EBL changes with redshift. Knowledge of the EBL and its still unknown evolution with redshift is much desired to constrain the integrated emission of galaxies. The acquired optical spectra will also allow us to categorize the targeted blazars into BL Lac objects or flat spectrum radio quasars.
