Title: Optical Counterparts in IC 10

Abstract: IC 10 is the closest known starburst galaxy and its well-constrained starburst age of 10 Myrs makes it a unique resource for studying the origin and evolution of compact objects. We have found $>0 X-ray point-sources in XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, the majority of which will be high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXRBs). We propose 1 night with KPNO Mayall 4m+MOSAIC and 1 night with WIYN+Hydra to identify the HMXRBs and study their optical counterparts. Our observing goals are: 1) To obtain deep continuum-subtracted H$alpha$ images that will pinpoint HMXRBs based on their strong H$alpha$ emission. 2) To obtain spectra for all of the 35 bright (R$<) candidates to determine their radial velocities (to diagnose IC 10 membership or foreground location) and the spectral types of the secondaries. A longer-term goal is 3) To create a set of deep (24th magnitude at SNR=10) optical images in Ha, BVRI and a legacy catalog for IC 10 that will be used to map the age and composition of the host populations in the vicinities of the XRB candidates.
