Title: Spectroscopic survey of nearby late-M dwarfs for near-future Earth-like planet searches

Abstract: M dwarfs have the small masses, radii, and luminosities, so they are one of the most promising targets to search for Earth-like planets in the habitable zone. They are indeed important for any future large planet-search programs including TESS and our infrared Doppler planet search with the Subaru Telescope. However, late-M dwarfs tend to be active and fast rotators, preventing us from obtaining the precise radial velocity measurements and validating the planet detections. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the rotation and activity of an M dwarf before its RV observations. We propose to obtain the medium- resolution optical spectra of 100 nearby late-M dwarfs using Hydra and Bench Spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5m telescope. The equivalent width of an H$alpha$ emission in the optical spectrum is a good tracer of the rotation velocity, enabling us to rank M dwarfs with slower rotations. Furthermore, the optical spectra can also be used to derive the properties of the M dwarfs. Our spectroscopic survey provides a useful database for the exoplanet surveys of late-M dwarfs.
