Title: ARCOIRIS Spectroscopy of Planetary Nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud: Wavelength Calibrators for JWST

Abstract: We propose to use ARCoIRIS on the Blanco 4m to observe four planetary nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These objects will be used as primary wavelength calibrators for many of the spectrographic modes on JWST. We need ground-based near infrared spectroscopic data in order to: (1) measure near infrared ($lambda < 2.5 mu$m) line strengths needed for proper planning of JWST observations at those wavelengths; (2) constrain both internal extinction and recombination line temperatures needed for photoionization models of planetary nebula emission, which we will use to predict line strengths at longer wavelengths that cannot be measured from the ground. In addition to supporting the JWST mission, we will extract quantitative science from the data by using the calculated extinction and line temperatures, combined with the fact that these objects have lower metallicity, to obtain unique constraints on the physical conditions of planetary nebulae and their progenitors.
