Title: ROtation in Diverse Environments of Orion: RoDEO - a NEWFIRM variability survey of Orion A

Abstract: We propose the first near-IR stellar rotation survey across an entire giant molecular cloud. Rotation in Diverse Environments of Orion, RoDEO, will use NEWFIRM to measure periodic variability and determine rotational periods of embedded young stars in the rich clusters, small groups and distributed population of the Orion A cloud. The program will measure rotation rates of stars with disks (and some protostars) identified in Spitzer surveys as well as diskless stars identified by XMM and Chandra. In addition, the program will identify candidate diskless stars. By measuring the distribution of rotation periods for diskless stars, we will exploit a new method for comparing the ages of the groups, clusters and isolated stars. Comparisons of the rotation periods of young stars in groups, clusters and isolation will show how the rotation regulation by disks is influenced by the birth environment, and in particular the density of the gas (which influences accretion). This program will build on extensive observations of Orion and will set the stage for spectroscopic follow up of the stars with detected rotation periods.
