Title: Unveiling the Inner Regions of Thermally Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) stars

Abstract: We propose to observe a sample of thermally-pulsating (TP) AGB stars at unprecedented angular resolution to study morphologies and dust and gas properties of their circumstellar envelopes and winds. TP-AGB stars are in one of the least understood phases of stellar evolution, and are crucial for understanding the interstellar medium and stellar populations of nearby and distant galaxies. The proposed observations will be the highest contrast near-infrared observations ever made of the inner regions (~50-800 AU) around TP-AGB stars, and will yield insights into their mass loss, winds, asymmetries, and dust formation. This in turn will provide crucial constraints on theoretical models of TP-AGB stars.
