Title: Infrared photometric monitoring of Galactic red supergiants

Abstract: We propose to investigate light variations of red supergiants (RSGs) in the Inner Galaxy. For RSGs with established distances, a period- luminosity (P-L) relation as a function of their physical parameters (i.e. luminosity and mass-loss rate) will be analyzed. This study is of primary importance for understanding the evolution of these massive stars and their mass-loss behavior, while the calibration of the P-L relationship will make RSGs useful indicators of distance. To do this we have selected a sample of 56 RSGs in isolation and 40 RSGs in clusters (RSGC1 and RSGC2). The sample consists of stars with known distance estimates, and extinction. Metallicities are already known for the two clusters. We aim to monitor the RSGs over a ~600 d range, which covers the typical periods of long period RSGs.
