Title: Monitoring and Modeling the Proto-Tatooine System KH 15D

Abstract: We propose to monitor the proto-Tatooine system V582 Mon (KH 15D) with ANDICAM to provide the data necessary for a definitive model. This binary T Tauri system is embedded in a circumbinary belt with an outer radius of about 5 AU and a width of about 3-4 AU. The belt is a highly settled, sharp-edged layer of evolved dust that precesses as a unit, probably on account of self-gravity. Its location and properties are consistent with the expectation that it is, or will soon be, a site of planetesimal formation, leading ultimately to terrestrial planets that will orbit a binary star. Inner belts such as these must be a common feature of binary (and presumably single star) system, otherwise we would never have found one so fortuitously located in space and time. Discovered in 1995, precession of the belt has now progressed to the point that one component, designated star B, which was unseen until 2012, is now being fully revealed at each apastron passage. The additional data to be obtained in this proposed study are vital to the model, which will inform and constrain theories of pre-main sequence evolution and planet formation in both binary and single star systems.
