Title: Redshift confirmation of distant ACTPol Sunyaev-Zel’dovich galaxy cluster candidates
Abstract: We propose to complete the follow-up of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect selected galaxy cluster candidates detected in seasons 1 and 2 of the ACTPol survey. We will obtain optical and NIR imaging of 18 candidates to confirm them as clusters and measure their photometric redshifts. The targets are expected to be at redshift greater than 0.5: objects at lower redshift have already been confirmed using SDSS data. Moreover, this sample is expected to be pure, with only 1-2 spurious detections expected at our chosen SZ detection significance cut (out of a total sample of 92 candidates, 74 of which already have measured redshifts). This program represents the first crucial step needed before these massive ACTPol clusters can be used for cosmology. Using this sample, we expect to improve upon the statistical uncertainty in ACT cluster cosmological constraints by more than a factor of 2, as well as increasing the number of very massive, very high redshift clusters known.
