Title: Lya emission at high resolution: a probe of neutral hydrogen content and Lyman continuum escape in low metallicity galaxies at z~2

Abstract: We propose to obtain moderately high resolution Gemini spectroscopy of Lya emission in four rare, low-metallicity, highly ionized galaxies at z~2, with multislit observations supplemented by additional galaxies with strong Lya emission. Low-resolution rest-frame UV spectra of all four galaxies reveal strong, strikingly symmetric Lya emission lines centered at or near the systemic velocity. Such profiles are extremely unusual, and place these objects among the best candidates yet discovered for galaxies in which partial coverage of neutral hydrogen allows the escape of Lya photons at the systemic redshift; such escape is predicted to be a signature of the escape of ionizing photons. The proposed observations will enable us to model the Lya emission lines, compare them to the predictions of photoionization models, and relate these results to the neutral hydrogen content of the galaxy and to the probability of Lyman continuum escape.
