Title: CTIO REU/PIA Student Observations: Targets of Opportunity

Abstract: We request 8 nights on the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9-m as part of the upcoming 2016 CTIO REU/PIA program. The main focus of this proposal is to provide direct, hands-on observational experience to 8 undergraduate students in observational techniques, astronomical data reduction, and multi-wavelength photometry. In order to expose the students to a variety of astronomical observations, we will observe various targets of opportunity (TOOs), including confirmation and follow-up of candidate supernovae (SNe), Novae, and Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), and the optical afterglows of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). Any candidate SNe, Novae, or NEOs that are confirmed, or GRB afterglows that are detected will be published immediately to the relevant Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBAT) circular or Gamma-ray Coordinates Network (GCN) circular. Additionally, any remaining time will be allocated to observe scientifically interesting targets of the students or their mentors choosing as time permits between subsequent TOOs.

Program Type: Standard/Galactic

Scheduled Nights:
Run 1 (2015B):  CT-0.9m/CFIM -- 6n on Jan 26 - Jan 31 2016
Run 1 (2016A):  CT-0.9m/CFIM -- 2n on Feb 01 - Feb 02 2016
