Title: A Metallicity Determination for the Diffuse Emission around NGC 4874 in the Coma Cluster

Abstract: We propose to use GMOS to make the first direct metallicity measurements for the intracluster stellar population in a galaxy cluster. In previous work we have found that for galaxy clusters in the HST CLASH sample the color profiles uniformly become increasingly blue with radius, which we have interpreted as evidence for decreasing metallicity with increasing radius. Here we proposal a pilot spectroscopic study targeting NGC 4874 during poor seeing conditions, using Lick indices to directly determine the metallicity out down to an R-band surface brightness of ~25 mag per square arcsec. This surface brightness corresponds to a radius of ~50 kpc from the center of the NGC 4874, which is sufficiently far for the stellar population to be dominated by the ICL. A novel aspect of this program is that we will be using the R150 grating in combination with the g+GG455 filters to isolate the relevant part of the spectrum. This approach enables use of a mask with a series of parallel slits, which can be co-added as a function of radius to increase the SNR per observation.
