Title: Spectroscopic observations of faint young stars in Orion nebula cluster

Abstract: Spectroscopic observations of young stars are essential for deriving the reliable their stellar properties which are key factors for understanding basic issues related to star formation and planet formation. Orion is the most nearby and active star forming region, and an ideal place to study star formation and planet formation. In this region, Orion nebula cluster has definitely received the most considerable attention. Towards ONC, we have performed a spectroscopic survey of young stars. Our spectroscopic sample, in combination of spectroscopic data in the literature is complete to r~18 mag. Here we propose to use Gemini-South/GMOS to extend our surveys, and obtain optical spectra for 220 faint young stellar object candidates in ONC. With these data, combined with other spectroscopic data from the literature and from our previous surveys, the spectroscopic sample in ONC will be complete to $r$~20 mag. We will investigate the disk properties across the mass spectrum in ONC and compare them with those in other regions in Orion, e.g. L1641, which provides us a change to study disk evolution in diverse environments at a similar distance. With such a spectroscopic sample, we will study the initial mass function in ONC, and compare it with the one in L1641. A comparison study between ONC and L1641 will improve our knowledge of how initial mass functions vary different environments.
