Title: Rapid Spectroscopy of SN 2010da: Observing a Neutron Star + Luminous Blue Variable Binary in Outburst

Abstract: SN 2010da is a young high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) consisting of a neutron star and a luminous blue variable. This is, to date, the only known HMXB containing an LBV, making it a unique system for studying LBVs, their evolution, and the role of binary interactions in driving LBV eruptions. We have recently proposed an ongoing Swift X-ray+UV monitoring campaign of SN 2010da, which will be able to detect the high-energy signature of SN 2010da entering a new outburst phase during Swift Cycle 12. Here we propose for Rapid Target-of-Opportunity optical+near-IR spectroscopy of SN 2010da at Gemini-S, to be triggered following signs of a new outburst. Combined with X-ray and UV data from Swift, these data will offer an unprecedented panchromatic overview of this unique LBV+NS binary in outburst. The spectra we request here will allow us to model the outflow velocities, circumstellar environment, and eruptive history of SN 2010da, furthering our understanding of both massive binary evolution and how binary interactions can drive LBV eruptions.
