Title: A GNIRS Survery of the Nearest Nuclear Star Clusters
Abstract: The nuclei of galaxies contain both massive black holes and dense nuclear star clusters. We will use GNIRS spectroscopy to measure dynamical masses and emission line fluxes for a sample of nuclei within 10 Mpc. Scaling relations for nuclear star clusters show a clear correlation with galaxy mass, but the correlation is based primarily on uncertain photometric mass estimates. We will greatly enlarge the sample of dynamical masses, including in early type galaxies, allowing us to determine how NSC masses correlate with galaxy mass across Hubble Type. We will also use the data to detect the presence of molecular gas at the centers of low mass galaxies that can then be followed up with high resolution ALMA and JWST observations to measure dynamical masses of the smallest central black holes.
