Title: The DECam Legacy Survey North Galactic Pole Extension for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Survey

Abstract: The DECam Legacy Survey (DECaLS) is an approved NOAO survey to image 6200~deg$^2$ of the SDSS/BOSS footprint that lies in the region $- 20^circ < delta < +30^circ$ to depths of $g=24.7$, $r=23.9$, and $z=23.0$ AB mag (5-$sigma$ point-source), providing optical imaging to complement public SDSS spectroscopy of 2.8 million extragalactic targets. Here we propose to extend DECaLS by adding an additional 1,710~deg$^2$ of near-equatorial sky in the North Galactic Cap. This proposed DECaLS Extension (``DECaLS+") provides critical imaging for the target selection for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey, which will yield spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars and provide sub-percent measurements of the distance scale and the expansion history of the universe. We are proposing DECaLS+ now so that it can be completed prior to the start of DESI in 2019A. DECalS is already providing href{http://legacysurvey.org/viewer}{underline{it public}} multicolor imaging that is significantly deeper than SDSS or Pan-STARRS and has superior image quality. Our survey will enable transformational studies of the dark and baryonic matter distribution in galaxy halos, focusing on the key issues of feedback and halo growth in the evolution of galaxies and clusters. The data will also expand studies of the halo and satellites of the Milky Way. DECaLS+ will enable DESI to cover the largest possible extragalactic footprint in its Key Project and public data releases, and thereby attain its design goals, while simultaneously creating a high-impact legacy resource for the astronomical community in this era of increasingly limited public resources.
