Title: A Multiplicity Survey of Solar-type Stars with Brown Dwarf Companions

Abstract: Brown dwarfs (BD) are objects that in the mass range between planets and stars. Studying their formation mechanisms is vital towards our understanding of the origins of stars and planets since they could either form like giant planets or low-mass stars. To investigate whether they form more like giant planets or more like low-mass stars, we propose to measure the multiplicity rate of these brown dwarf host stars using high-spatial resolution speckle imaging with DSSI at WIYN. We will compare the measured multiplicity rate to that of field stars and giant planet host stars to study the impact of stellar companions on brown dwarf formation. It will be the first uniform and systematic study of multiplicity rate for the largest close-in BD host star sample using speckle imaging. Results from this study will help provide serious constrains on brown dwarf formation theories and address links between planet formation and star formation.
