Title: A Spectroscopic Study of the Black Hole Binary MAXI J1659-152 in Quiescence

Abstract: We propose to obtain a low-resolution optical spectrum for the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1659-152 during quiescence with Gemini-S/GMOS. The primary objectives of the proposed observation are to estimate the contribution from accretion and to determine the spectral type of the companion if absorption features of the secondary star are observed. Such an observation will allow is to set better constraints on the distance to the system, the nature of the companion, and accretion luminosity during quiescence.
