Title: The Circum-galactic Medium of obscured Active Galactic Nuclei hosts
Abstract: Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is thought to play a vital role in galaxy evolution, but studies of the relationship between AGN and the extended circum-galactic medium (CGM) that fuels star- formation on long timescales are limited to optically selected, unobscured AGN. Unobscured AGN spectra are dominated by continuum emission from the AGN accretion disk which prevents characterizations of the host galaxies. Consequently, it is not possible to construct a matched control sample of non-AGN galaxies with CGM constraints -- a necessary step for discerning the impact of AGN feedback on CGM gas. Here, we propose a survey to obtain confirmation spectra of $23$ mid-IR selected obscured AGN candidates probed at $dlesssim 200$ kpc by background absorption spectra from the SDSS. Obscured AGN spectra are dominated by stellar emission from the host galaxies enabling accurate measurements of the host stellar masses and recent star formation histories. The proposed survey of obscured AGN probed by background absorption spectra will produce a unique dataset for studying the relationship between CGM content and both AGN and host properties as well as the construction of a carefully matched control sample of non- AGN galaxies.
