Title: Southern DA White Dwarf Calibration Standards

Abstract: This is a repeat of our successful 2015B proposal. In 5 nights we had 2.5 hours through marginal conditions, and we actually lost the last 3 to the earthquake in Sept 2015. Buoyed by our success in assembling a space-photometry and ground-based spectroscopy data set on our equatorial and northern hemisphere faint DA white dwarf standard stars, we would like to begin assembling the necessary spectroscopy for a complement of southern stars from SOAR/GOODMAN. These stars come from the McCook & Sion white dwarf catalog and from DES-team data analyzed and partially followed up with identification spectroscopy. The spectroscopy gives us log(g) and T$_{eff}$, which provides an SED from which we can hang space-based photometry on the HST system, and derive reddening. While there are many details that need to be gotten right in going from the photometry and spectroscopy to achieve a milli-mag- accuracy set of standards for the new ground-based surveys (and perhaps even for JWST), we need to start with a good set of DA white dwarfs with measured physical parameters. In Cycle 24 or 25 of HST we will ask to begin observing some of these stars, as we have done at the equator and in the north in Cycles 20 and 22.
