Title: Near-Infrared Imaging of our 250K Neighbor

Abstract: WISE 0855-07 is a remarkable object discovered by K. Luhman in 2014. It is only 2 pc away, has Teff=250K and a likely mass of 5 Jupiters. J-band, [3.6] and [4.5] photometry are available, as are parallax and proper motion measurements. We request Gemini North time with NIRI to obtain Y, H and K photometry. This object is much less luminous than any other known brown dwarf. The data will add significantly to our existing sample of photometry, and allow us to further improve the atmospheric models, which include non-equilibrium chemistry and cloud formation. Such studies enable the exploration of effective temperature and surface gravity, and hence mass and age for the local population of isolated few-Jupiter-mass brown dwarfs.
