Title: Emission Lines from Central Galactic Zones: Searching for Winds

Abstract: The central molecular zones (CMZs) of galaxies are key to understanding the role of star-formation and feedback and thus how the nuclear regions of galaxies evolve over time. For example, major differences in the gas content and nuclear properties of M82 and NGC 253 have had a large impact on the cosmic ray populations and therefore the energy balance of these systems. To explore these issues in more detail, we are measuring critical optical emission line ratios in a variety of CMZs with the HexPak IFU using the 860 line grating. Although these systems are very dusty, our previous experience from WIYN H$\alpha$ region spectroscopy shows that nuclear region emission is visible, but sometimes faint. We will obtain NIR spectra covering [SIII], the upper Paschen series, and OI 8446~\AA, emission lines via this proposal. These observations will be less affected by dust absorption, thereby allowing us to gain better insights into ionized gas kinematics and the nature of feedback in CMZs of normal and starbursting galaxies.
