Title: A living galaxy

Abstract: This project is a variability survey of M31, aimed at identifying and studying a relevant number of optical counterparts among more than 2000 X-ray sources observed over the years towards this galaxy. By comparing our ODI images taken at two epochs, and by making use of previous multiwavelength surveys from space and from the ground, we will detect variability patterns in different optical filters. We will use the r, g and u broad band filters in the first phase of this study. The u filter is particularly crucial for the identification of the optical counterparts. We plan narrow band imaging and follow-up optical spectroscopy in subsequent stages of this project.
