Title: Planet Occurrence around Mid-M Dwarfs in the Field

Abstract: Planet occurrence rate has been found to increase with decreasing stellar mass, and one out of four M dwarfs are expected to host Earth- sized planets within their habitable zones. M dwarf systems are therefore our most promising targets in the search for exoplanets. Yet the majority of probable mid-type M dwarfs in the original \Kepler\ field have so far eluded detailed characterization beyond being identified as probable mid-type M dwarfs from photometric colors, and planet occurrence statistics do not include this population. In order to make an accurate calculation of the planet occurrence rate around mid- type M dwarfs, we need to determine the stellar properties (e.g. temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, radius, and mass) of a statistically significant fraction of these stars, including systems with and without planets. \it{We seek to fully characterize the properties of probable mid-type M dwarfs in the \Kepler\ field by obtaining red optical spectra with Hydra in order to constrain the planet occurrence rate for these low-mass stars.}
