Title: Stellar populations in the Palomar Galaxy Sample

Abstract: We request 3 nights with the Mayall/KOSMOS instrument to obtain high signal-to-noise, high resolution, optical spectroscopy of a sample of Palomar galaxies for which we already have GNIRS near-infrared data in hand. Our aims are to further the study of the stellar populations in these galaxies and {\bf 1)} determine whether they show the trend seen in massive ellipticals that the index of the ``bottom-heavy'' IMF correlates with mass, and {\bf 2)} obtain optical-to-NIR fits of single stellar populations, a panchromatic approach to the modeling of the star formation history of galaxies that has never been attempted before. This project was awarded time in the 14B semester, but the scheduled nights were almost completely lost to poor weather.

Program Type: Standard/Extragalactic
