Title: Using WIYN to Unlock the Assembly Histories of Recently-Quenched Ellipticals

Abstract: We propose to examine a newly discovered population of nearby, massive elliptical galaxies with bluer-than-normal colors having no nebular emission (i.e., quiescent) but younger ($<3{\rm Gyrs}$) stellar populations. These galaxies are likely remnants of recent major mergers undergoing a quenching phase, shutting down the merger-induced star formation and migrating them onto the red sequence. Several possible quenching mechanisms have been posited, but detailed spectroscopic analysis with large spatial coverage is required to differentiate among them. The long wavelength coverage and wide aperture of SparsePak will allow us to construct spatially-resolved star formation histories to simultaneously constrain both the quenching timescales and the mass assembly histories of this rare population of local elliptical galaxies.
