Title: A Radial Velocity Study of Anomalous Stars in Old Open Cluster NGC 6791
Abstract: The origin of anomalous stars that do not follow standard stellar evolution pathways, such as blue stragglers and sub-subgiants, has been an enduring challenge to explain. In star clusters these systems have been shown to be closely linked to the binary-star population with both blue stragglers and sub-subgiants having a high frequency of binary companions. We propose to measure radial velocities and complete orbital solutions for the blue stragglers and sub-subgiants in the old metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 (8 Gyr, [Fe/H]= +0.30). These observations will more than double the known orbital parameters for cluster sub-subgiants and help form the observational basis for a rigorous theoretical investigation into the formation channel for sub- subgiants being led by Dr. Aaron Geller and involving Emily Leiner.
