Title: Correlating Photometric Variability and Chromospheric Activity in Kepler Stars

Abstract: The variety of photometric variations due to the magnetic activity of Sun-like stars, as revealed by {\it Kepler}, has significantly impacted our understanding of stars, calling for a thorough characterization of this behavior, an important noise source in planet detection. Our work, based on previous WIYN/Hydra observations of {\it Kepler} stars, reveals that many stars appearing inactive'' by traditional measures may be highly variable in radial-velocity and/or exhibit complex photometric variations. Our results, along with recent modeling efforts, suggest promising observational predictors of this behavior. We propose to measure the activity of \$\sim0 stars in the {\it Kepler} field, primarily asteroseismic targets with precisely determined parameters, via their Ca II H\&K emission, over a relatively long time-baseline, in order to link activity and its degree of variation to photometric variability. We will also use these data to refine models that seek to predict photometric and radial-velocity variations of potential planet-hosting stars. This project was previously awarded 5 nights, but 4 were lost to bad weather and instrument problems. We therefore request additional time to complete this project.
