Visitor Center & Gift shop

This is your first stop whenever visiting Kitt Peak National Observatory. Interactive and informative exhibits, an auditorium, and well stocked gift shop await you.

Wheelchair accessible with conveniently located free parking, the Visitor Center is where all guests check in. Whether you are registered for a nighttime program or special event, are interested in a guided tour, wish to view our exhibits, or plan to shop, please stop here first. We can tell you about any special activities occurring the day of your visit and provide an orientation and map to the observatory campus. Open daily 9 am to 3:45 pm except certain major holidays.

Daytime Activities

We offer you a variety of experiences such as exhibits and guided tours during daytime hours, along with spectacular views of surrounding mountains, desert valleys, and the flora and fauna of a unique sky island ecosystem.

We offer three docent-led tours on most days to three different large research telescopes, live views of the Sun (whenever weather and volunteer staffing permits), and an array of indoor and outdoor exhibits. You may pick up a map in the Visitor Center to experience a self-guided tour. Plus, the nearly 7,000-foot mountaintop is one of the prettiest spots in southern Arizona providing panoramic views stretching up to 100 miles.

Nighttime Activities

An array of nighttime stargazing & observing programs

A clear night on Kitt Peak is not to be missed or soon forgotten. The nation's observatory was built here for its dark, frequently clear skies and you can share in those views.

Special Events, Private Groups & Schools

Even more daytime, evening, and off-site programs are available here for individuals, families, schools, and other groups.

These are additional programs associated with interesting space phenomena sure to be of interest. We also offer a special program offsite with the National Park Service. Meteors, the Moon, space weather, binocular astronomy and more for you and your family. Or are you a teacher looking for a unique educational field trip? A youth group leader looking for a special overnight group experience? Do you lead or organize another group such as a tour company or guest ranch and are looking for a special experience for your members? See if these offerings are right for you.

Our daily guided tours are a wonderful way to quickly taste the flavor of Kitt Peak. However, if you or someone you love is really interested in astronomy, telescopes, and our observatory history these extended length in-depth tours are for you.
