PROGRESS REPORT – December 30, 1999
Accomplishments / Status
Summary: Overall, 6% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed. Primary activities for this reporting period have centered around the design and fabrication of the prototypes for the linear and rotary drive and the optical mount, and on the OIWFS Optical Bench design. The 3D design of the short blue camera barrel of the Camera Assembly has also been completed.
Next Milestone: The Pre-Fabrication Review is the next major project milestone, currently scheduled for February, 2000. This review will also serve as a USGP Quarterly Review. This date is under review and will depend on the progress made on the optical bench design and analysis.
Earned Value: BCWS $383,515 SPI 0.86
Project Management: (12% completed) Overall, the project is 6% complete. A summary schedule can also be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Planning.
Systems Engineering: (32% towards Pre-fab Review) No significant progress was made in the month of December. The activities in work are 1) thermal analysis, 2) structural analysis, 3) linear prototype, 4) rotary prototype, and 5) optical mount prototype.
The Optical Mount Prototype fabrication is complete, and the Rotary Mechanism Prototype fabrication is continuing. Most of the detailed drawings for the Linear Mechanism Prototype are complete and have been released into the shop. The rest of the detailed drawings will be done by January 7, 2000. A cold motor test summary report (SDN) remains to be done.
SDN’s can be found on the web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Systems Design.
Mechanical Design: (2% completed) The 3D design of the Wavefront Sensor Bench assembly is near completion. No significant progress was made in December on the Spectrograph Optical bench. The preliminary design of the Fore-Optics Module bench is completed and is waiting for analysis which is being done as part of the Systems Engineering effort. This effort is behind schedule and will impact the scheduled date of the Pre-Fabrication Review.
The 3D design of one Camera Assembly Barrel is complete. The design of the remaining three barrels will begin after all drawings for the prototypes are released for fabrication. The Camera Assembly is on the project critical path, and proceeding with the camera barrel design has minimal risk of rework due to bench design impact.
Mechanical Fabrication: (0% completed) Component fabrication of the mechanism prototypes has started. All prototype fabrication should be completed by the end of January 2000. The only fabrication being done at this time is in support of the prototyping effort.
Electronics Design: (0% completed) No activity has occurred on this work package. Electronics systems information is installed on the web site and may be viewed at <ftp://ftp.noao.edu/gnirs/elect>
Software Development: (0% completed) No activity has occurred on this work package. Work on this effort will start in January 2000.
Procurement: (1% towards completion) The major activities in this Work Package include working with the local vendors to do parts fabrication for the mechanism prototypes. No update is available from optics vendors RMI and II-VI. The first inspections of RMI optics have taken place and fabrication is proceeding.
Problems / Solutions
Systems Engineering: The bench structural analysis is behind schedule.
Bench Design: The solid model Optical Bench designs for both the Spectrograph and OIWFS benches are behind schedule. We are working to resolve this. These designs have direct impact on the structural and thermal analyses, which must be complete before the Pre-fab Review can be held.
