PROGRESS REPORT - November, 1999

 Accomplishments / Status

Summary: Overall, 5% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed. Primary activities for this reporting period have centered around the design and fabrication of the prototypes for the linear and rotary drive and the optical mount, and on the Optical Bench design.  The bench design effort includes both the spectrograph and wavefront sensor benches.  Preliminary designs of these benches should be done by the end of November, and a preliminary flexure analysis should be done by December 15th.  In addition, work has been accomplished on the mechanism test set, and cold motor testing has been completed.  Work has started on design of the Camera Assembly.

The Pre-Fabrication Review is the next major project milestone, and is still scheduled for February 2000.  This date will be reviewed in late December, depending on the progress made on the optical bench design and analysis.

The preliminary Software Plan was submitted to Gemini through the USGP on November 3, 1999, and has been approved.

Next Milestone: Pre-fabrication Review, scheduled for February, 2000. This review will also serve as a USGP Quarterly Review.

Earned Value:

  BCWS $373,872 SPI 0.73
  BCWP $274,496 CPI 1.16
  ACWP $236,440
Project Management: (12% completed) A summary task schedule attached to this report shows percent complete on all tasks in work.  Overall, the project is 5% complete.  The summary schedule can also be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Planning.
Systems Engineering: (32% towards Pre-fab Review) The activities in work are 1) thermal analysis, 2) structural analysis, 3) linear prototype, 4) rotary prototype, 5) optical mount prototype, 6) optical design update, 7) cold motor testing, and 8) mechanism test set.
The Optical Mount and Rotary Mechanism Prototype drawings have been released into the shop for fabrication.  Most of the detailed drawings for the Linear Mechanism Prototype are complete and have been released into the shop.  The rest of the detailed drawings will be done by the end of November.  Cold motor testing is complete, and only a summary report (SDN) remains.

Several SDN’s have been updated or added to the GNIRS web site.  SDN’s can be found on the web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Systems Design.

Mechanical Design: (1% completed) The 3D design of the Main Optics Bench and Wavefront Sensor Bench assemblies are in process, being done in parallel with the analyses that is part of the Systems Engineering effort.  This effort is behind schedule, but should be done in time for the February Pre-Fabrication review if the mechanical engineer keeps to the schedule estimates he submitted in November.

The 3D design of Camera Assembly barrels has started.  The Camera Assembly is on the project critical path, and proceeding with the camera barrel design has minimal risk of rework due to bench design impact.

Mechanical Fabrication: (0% completed) Instrument component fabrication, except that needed to support prototype testing, is planned to start in December ’99 – January ‘00.  The only fabrication being done is in support of the prototyping effort.

Electronics Design: (0% completed) Activities in this Work Package have been focused primarily in defining dewar and mechanism wiring.  This work is nearly complete and will be updated as the detailed design is done.  Electronics systems information is installed on the web site and may be viewed at <http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/FTP.htm>

Software Development: (0% completed) No work except for writing of the Preliminary Software Plan has been done in this work package.  Work on this effort will start in January 2000.

Procurement: (1% towards completion) The major activities in this Work Package include working with the optics vendors RMI and II-VI.  The RMI optics for the cameras and window, and II-VI mirrors for the Offner Secondary and Collimator, are in process and on schedule.  The first inspections of RMI optics are in process.

 Problems / Solutions

Systems Engineering:  The bench structural analysis is behind schedule and is being carefully tracked.  A preliminary analysis is scheduled to be done on December 15.

Bench Design:  The Optical Bench designs for both the Spectrograph and OIWFS benches are behind schedule.  We are working to resolve this.  These designs have direct impact on the structural and thermal analyses.  An assessment of the impact on the Pre-Fabrication Review will be made the week of December 13.
