GNIRS PROGRESS REPORT

July 26 – August 31, 2002

           Accomplishments / Status 

  Summary:  92% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.  Progress was made on radiation shield assembly rework, bench assembly, fit checks and wiring, and slit mechanism cold testing. The Project Manager now projects delivery of the instrument for March 2002, while the Work Package Manager believes the Pre-Ship A/T will be completed in Tucson in June 2002.

The 9th Quarterly Review is scheduled for  September 3rd.

The last SR camera lens has been returned to Janos for repair and recoating. This camera lens should be returned in early September, and will be cold-cycled before installing into the camera. Flexure testing is scheduled for early October, following completion of instrument assembly and initial testing. All mechanism testing is complete.

The instrument is scheduled to ship to Chile in the first quarter of 2003.

This table reflects planned and actual charges to the project as of August 27, 2002.  The team has spent $1,537,926 in capital to date.

 Project Management: (92% complete)

The project plan may be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Management, Planning. The current delivery of the GNIRS instrument is March 2002.

  Systems Engineering: (100% of planned work) The major activity in this work package has been bearing test and evaluation and slit mechanism test support.

  Mechanical Design, Fabrication, Assembly and Test: (96% overall) The major activity in this work package has been slit mechanism and shield rework.

Mechanisms:  (100% complete). 

Benches:   (100% complete). 

Fixed Assemblies: (93% complete overall). Only the Shipping container fabrication is left.

   Electronics: (87% complete overall). Basic work is complete, only a small amount of dewar internal wiring and completion of the documentation is left.

   Software Development: (100% complete). 

   Alignment and Integration: (57% complete overall)

  Deliverables: (54% complete overall)

Work in this area has focused on the Software Maintenance manual, which has been submitted to Gemini for review. Draft manual outlines are complete for the Hardware Maintenance and User’s manuals.  These are ready for submission to Gemini.

  Procurement: (99% complete overall).  SRC lens is scheduled to return from Janos rework on September 10th.  Other open items are miscellaneous parts and supplies.

 

          Problems / Solutions

SRC camera lens required rework by Janos, and will be cold cycled to insure structural integrity before installation in the camera.
