GNIRS PROGRESS REPORT

July 21– August 24, 2001

           Accomplishments / Status

Summary:  Overall, more than 76% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.

The main focus of this report period has been completing fabrication of mechanisms, fabrication of major assemblies such as the Bulkhead Assembly and Dewar Shells and the mechanical design of remaining assemblies such as radiation shields.  Except for the Focus Assembly, all mechanisms have completed initial fabrication and are in fit check, rework or test.  The Pre-Slit and Post-Slit benches have finished fabrication and are due to be painted after fit checks are completed.  Mechanism assembly and warm assembly testing is underway, but is proceeding more slowly than expected due to small part fabrication issues in nearly every mechanism that had to be corrected before assembly and warm testing could be effectively started.

The OIWFS components integration and alignment has been delayed due to some components not matching the interfaces given in the ICD, causing rework on the WFS bench.  The bench modifications are being done on a low priority basis.  Work on the WFS will continue on a non-interference basis with mechanism assembly and testing.

The project remains about 6 weeks behind schedule with respect to start of instrument integration.  The fall 2002 delivery date is not impacted.

Next Milestone: The next major project milestone is the completion of the Bulkhead Assembly and Dewar Shells in September.
