PROGRESS REPORT
June 5 – July 7, 2000
Accomplishments
/ Status
Summary: Overall, 25% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery
has been completed. The primary focus of this reporting period has been 1) the
solid model design/analysis of the Post-Slit, Pre-Slit, and OIWFS Optical
Benches, 2) the risk reduction testing of the Linear and Rotary drive
prototypes, and 3) the design of camera barrels, Filter Wheel mechanism, and
fabrication of the Environmental Cover mechanism and motor drive assembly.
Next
Milestone:
The next major project milestone is the release of the optical benches for
fabrication in August 2000.

Project
Management:
(32% completed) A summary task
schedule can be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/.
Systems
Engineering:
(81%) The activities in work are 1) structural analysis, 3) linear prototype, 4)
rotary prototype, 5) bearing test fixture.
The
structural analysis is in process and will be complete by the mid-July.
The
Linear Mechanism Prototype is ready for cold testing. The Rotary Mechanism Prototype is in cold test.
The bearing test prototype is fabrication.
Mechanical
Design and Fabrication: (9%) Activities include optical bench solid modeling, camera design,
filter wheel design, environmental cover fabrication, and motor drive assembly
fabrication.
Wavefront
Sensor Bench, Post-Slit Optical bench, the Pre-Slit Bench, the Collimator Mount.
The next task for these assemblies is to finish the detail 3D and 2D
designs for fabrication. This
should be completed by mid-August.
The
3D design of the Short Red and Short Blue Camera Barrels are complete.
The 2D drafting of these camera barrels is 100% and 16% complete,
respectively. The 3D design of the
Long Red Camera is 80% complete, and the Blue camera 3D design is 20% complete.
The 3D design of the camera drive spindle hub is 100% complete.
The
3D solid model design of the Filter Wheel Assembly mechanism is 94% complete.
The
fabrication of the Environmental Cover Assembly is 85% complete.
The
Acquisition Mirror mechanism 2D drafting is 7% complete.
The
Motor Drive Assembly has been released for fabrication.
Electronics
Design:
(10%) Activities in this work package include electrical and mechanical design
and construction of a simulator for use in software testing, dewar and mechanism
wiring design definition, and array interface details.
The
construction of the Mechanism Simulator started
in June and will complete in July. Work
on defining dewar wiring, and ALADDIN array interfacing details and on the
detailed Mechanism wiring in process.
Software
Development:
(27%) The Components Controller Software is 56% complete.
Work has started on the System Software and is 6% complete.
Procurement:
(27%) Major activities in this Work Package included optics work at RMI (50%
complete) and monitoring vendor fabrication for the Environmental Cover
Assembly. We have inspected
and accepted 4 entrance windows and 8 lenses from RMI and one filter from NDC in
the UK.
