GNIRS PROGRESS REPORT

May 21– June 20, 2002

           Accomplishments / Status

Summary:  92% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.  Progress was made on radiation shield assembly, bench assembly and wiring, and mechanism cold testing.

The Dewar vacuum checks were successfully completed. Delivery of the remaining SR camera lens is expected in late June, and will be integrated into the camera in early July. Flexure testing has been delayed until mid-July due to late shipment and installation of the flex rig.

The investigation into the cause of the Slit mechanism cold test failure has been completed. The cause was primarily due to bearing failure. The bearings are in the process of being replaced with tungsten-sulfide coated bearings and the mechanism will be cold tested in the last week of June. Because of the nature of the bearing failure, the relevant bearings in the other cold mechanisms are also being replaced.

All testing is scheduled to complete and the instrument shipped to Chile in late November. All planned schedule contingency has been used.

Next Milestone: The next major project milestones are:

                                                - Slit mechanism cold testing completion in June
                                                - Bench installation in July
                                                - Thermal Distribution Assembly installation in June
                                                - Flexure testing in mid-late July
