GNIRS
PROGRESS REPORT
April
24– May 20, 2002
Accomplishments / Status
Summary:
92% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.
Progress was made on radiation shield assembly, bench assembly and
wiring, collimator characterization and mechanism cold testing.
Fabrication
is complete. Any remaining fabrication will be considered part of assembly
rework or part of the integration process.
Delivery of the remaining SR camera lens is expected in late May, and
the lens will be integrated into the camera following flexure testing. Two
gratings, which had wrong rulings, have been redone and delivery is expected
this week. Integration of the gratings and prisms onto their respective
turrets is scheduled for next week.
All
mechanisms have completed cold testing except the Slit mechanism, which did
not pass cold testing. An
investigative team has been assigned to determine the exact cause of the
anomaly. The assembly has until June 30 to complete cold testing
before impacting the instrument delivery schedule.
Flexure
testing has been delayed until mid-July due to late shipment and installation
of the flex rig, and will occur after the 1st instrument cold test
instead of before.
All testing is scheduled to complete and the instrument shipped to Chile on November 29th. All planned contingency, except for the 4th cold cycle, has been used.
Next
Milestone:
The next major project milestones are:
- Instrument vacuum checks in June
- Bench installation in June
- Slit mechanism cold testing completion in June

Problems / Solutions
Flexure rig delay has caused re-planning of first integration steps. The slit mechanism did not pass cold testing; the cause is being investigated.
