April 23 – May 17, 2001

           Accomplishments / Status

Summary:  Overall, 64% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.  The main focus of this report period has been 3D and 2D design of the Bulkhead Assembly, the Passive Collimator, 3D design of the support structure(s), and fabrication.  All mechanisms are in fabrication except for one camera barrel and the Focus Assembly, which are in drafting check.  The Pre-Slit and Post-Slit benches are in fabrication. Work has started on several fixed assemblies.  Mechanism assembly and test has been planned in detail, and will start June. The OIWFS components from Gemini are now expected to arrive in June.  A waiver request to expand the envelope GNIRS will occupy has been granted by Gemini.  The next GNIRS Quarterly Review will be held on June 13 in Tucson.

Next Milestone: The next major project milestone is the completion of the 3D design of the Passive Collimator Compensation Assembly in late May.  This will complete the design of the cold structure.

        Problems / Solutions

One BaF2 lens was broken during the final coating process at Janos.  Material to replace the lens has been found, but the lens will be delivered 12 weeks late.  We have adjusted our camera assembly/test plan to compensate.

             Key Personnel

Jerry Penegor, GNIRS EE, is working Array Controller issues in parallel with GNIRS assignments.  There is no negative impact to GNIRS. Two interns have been hired to assist over the summer, one Junior Optical Sciences student and one EE graduate student.  Both will start work on June 4th and be here for 10 weeks.  John Pina, part-time technician and Optical Sciences student, will be participating in the NOAO REU program over the summer and will not be working on the GNIRS project except as time allows.
