GNIRS PROGRESS REPORT

February 1 – February 19, 2002

           Accomplishments / Status

Summary:  87% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.  Progress was made on radiation shield design and Camera Barrel assembly cold testing.

The Passive Radiation Shields are in fabrication.  The active Shields have completed 3-D design and are about midway through 2-D detailing. These shields should be into fabrication the first week in March.

The Camera Assembly is now in cold test functional testing. It should complete this week. After cold testing, the optics will be installed into the camera barrels and the completed assembly installed into the Post-Slit Bench.

The Slit/Decker Assembly has been reworked to accommodate changes in the IFU module (as requested by Durham and directed by Gemini). This assembly has been modified and cleaned, and is currently being re-assembled and readied for warm and cold testing. Cold tests will include the entire Pre-slit Assembly (two Filter Wheels, Slit/Decker, Fore-Optics).

The Grating Turret is being prepared for cold test. Either it or the Pre-slit Assembly is next to be cold tested. Wiring of the benches is in process. This involves wiring temperature sensors, heaters, and harnessing for mechanisms, etc.

It appears that neither the OIWFS Prism nor the IFU will be available in time for integration into the GNIRS before the instrument is assembled.

Next Milestone: The next major project milestone is the release of the Active Radiation Shields to fabrication by February 28th.

           Problems / Solutions

Radiation Shields remain the pacing item on the project.  Cleaning and testing mechanisms is also a high priority item.

Durham has raised serious issues with the IFU interface.  We have modified the Slit-slide to accommodate a requested change, with a minor impact on the overall project schedule of about 1 week.
