PROGRESS REPORT
November 23 – December 20, 2000
Accomplishments / Status
Summary: Overall, 43% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed. The primary focus of this reporting period has been 1) solid modeling and 2D detailing of the Post-Slit Optical Bench and associated cold structure; 2) 3D and 2D design of the Focus mechanism; 3) layout of the LN2 Pre-Cool system; 4) fabrication of the Pre-Slit optical benches; 5) fabrication of the Slit/Decker mechanisms; 6) 2D detailing of the Prism, Grating and Camera Turrets and 7) fabrication of the Filter Wheel mechanism.
Next
Milestone:
The next major project milestone is the ordering of all remaining optics by
January 16th.

Project
Management:
(47% completed) The project plan may be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/
under Management, Planning. The
scheduled delivery date of the completed GNIRS instrument has not changed.
Systems
Engineering:
(100% of planned work) The activity in work included systems engineering input
to the design process, primarily cold structure design and the LN2
Pre-Cool system, and cold motor testing.
Cold
Motors: All 12 Phytron motors have
been replaced and cold tested, with all but one passing the qualification
screening tests. We still have 2
spare motors on loan from Gemini which can now be returned.
Mechanical
Design: (39%
overall including: Mechanisms 51%, Benches 46%, and Fixed Assemblies 8%).
Activities included optical bench solid modeling and detailing, focus
mechanism design, grating turret design, prism turret design and detailing, and
filter wheel detailing.

Detailed
mechanism status:
The
Camera mechanism is in various stages of 3D, 2D design and fabrication:
Camera top Assembly:
75%
Short Red Camera:
90% complete, fabrication 75% complete
Short Blue camera:
17% complete, 2D drafting 20% complete
Long Red Camera:
14% complete, 2D drafting 20% complete
Long Blue Camera:
8% complete, 3D design 13% complete
Camera drive spindle Hub: 77%
complete, fabrication 55% complete
The
focus mechanism 3D design is 95% complete.
The
environmental cover assembly is waiting testing.
The
acquisition mirror mechanism 2D is released to fabrication.
The
slit-decker fabrication is 55% complete.
The
filter wheel mechanism fabrication is 10% complete.
The
grating turret 3D design is 90% complete and 2D detailing is 10% complete.
The
prism turret fabrication is 10% complete.
The
motor drive assemblies are 10% through assembly.
Benches:
The
Post-Slit bench is 50% complete overall, and will be released for fabrication in
early January 2001.
The
OIWFS bench is 100% complete.
The
Collimator housing is 26% complete overall, and is ready to begin 2D design.
The
Pre-Slit bench consists of the POM and Offner assembly.
The POM is 49% complete overall with 2D drafting at 75% and fabrication
at 23%. The Offner is 37% complete
overall with fabrication at 36% complete.
Electronics:
(42%) Activities in this work package include 1) dewar and mechanism wiring
design definition; 2) array interface wiring definition; 3) cold stationing
definition; 4) thermal enclosure wiring definition and 5) OIWFS electronics
wiring and packaging definition.
The component controller thermal enclosure design is
complete and is being wired. Work
on defining dewar wiring and ALADDIN array interfacing details and detailed
mechanism wiring is in process. Dewar
and shield interface PCB’s are being fabricated at a vendor, and all
connectors and boards are on order.
Software
Development:
(27%) The Components Controller Software is 42% complete, lab support software
is 6% complete, and the high level Epics software is 1% complete.
The next phase is actual testing of the component controller code, which
will test motor drive and mechanism status and position sensing.
Component controller software completion is waiting for completion of the
electronics thermal enclosure.
Optics: 11 of 18 camera lenses and windows have been completed and
accepted. Only the BaF2 lenses
for the short red and blue cameras remain to be fabricated.
Two lots of BaF2 material have failed thus far, and a third
lot is in process. We have another
source for these remaining lenses if the vendor being used by RMI fails in their
manufacture of lens material.
Grating
master rulings have been completed and tested.
Grating replicas will be ordered by January 15th 2001.
Prism
drawings are complete and are scheduled to be ordered by January 15th.
Procurement:
(49%) Major activities in this Work Package included optics work at RMI, and
monitoring vendor fabrication.
Problems / Solutions
The OIWFS component late delivery will impact the project in calendar year 2001.
Completion of the RMI camera optics procurement is still in question until we receive word on the success of the BaF2 vendor’s success.
