PROGRESS REPORT – January 31, 2000

Accomplishments / Status

Summary: Overall, 10% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed. The primary focus of this reporting period has been the fabrication of the linear and rotary drive prototypes, testing of the optical mount prototype, and OIWFS Optical Bench design. The 3D design of the short red camera barrel of the Camera Assembly, the Filter Wheel Mechanism Assembly, and the Environmental Cover Assembly have been started.

Next Milestone: The Pre-Fabrication Review is the next major project milestone, currently scheduled for May 11. The USGP will hold a Quarterly Review in the next month or two.

Earned Value:BCWS$383,515SPI1.00

BCWP$382,271CPI1.53

ACWP$249,680

Note that the MS Project schedule was revised to move some mechanical design and analysis tasks into the future consistent with a May 11 date for the PFR. This meant that (a) BCWS did not change in the last month, and (b) that the ACWP computed by MS Project actually decreased from the prior month. ACWP normally is computed using actual costs reported from a financial tracking system, but such reports are not available from the NOAO CAS system at this time.

Project Management: (18% completed) A summary task schedule is attached to this report which shows percent complete on all tasks in work.Overall, the project is 10% complete. The summary schedule can also be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Planning.

Systems Engineering: (56%) The activities in work are 1) thermal analysis,

2) structural analysis, 3) linear prototype, 4) rotary prototype, and 5) optical mount prototype.

The Optical Mount Prototype is in test/evaluation.The Linear Mechanism Prototype and Rotary Mechanism Prototype are in fabrication and will be complete mid-February.The cold motor test summary report is in process.

Mechanical Design and Fabrication: (3%) The 3D design of the Wavefront Sensor Bench assembly is 95% complete. No progress has been made on the Spectrograph Optical bench. The preliminary design of the Fore-Optics Module bench is completed and is waiting for analysis.

The 3D design of the second Camera Barrel (SRC) is in process. The design of the remaining two barrels will begin in February. The Camera Assembly Center Bench is being done as part of the Spectrograph Bench design effort.

The 3D solid model designs of the Filter Wheel Assembly and Environmental Cover Assembly have started.

The only fabrication being done at this time is in support of the prototyping effort. All prototype fabrication should be completed by mid-February.

Electronics Design: (0%) No activity has occurred on this work package.

Software Development: (0%) Work on the Engineering Software work package has started. The overall plan for the software effort is being reviewed, and the current plan will be revised in February to reflect the software engineer’s input on specific tasks and priorities.

Procurement: (5%) Major activities in this Work Package include working with the local vendors to do parts fabrication for the mechanism prototypes.Vendor fabrication for the linear and rotary prototype parts is 33% and 52% complete, respectively. The optics work at RMI is 45% complete, and at II-VI is 50% complete, with all optics 23% complete overall.Inspection of the optics at II-VI is scheduled for the week of 2/7 or 2/14.

Problems / Solutions

Systems Engineering:The bench structural and thermal analysis is behind schedule and will be done after solid modeling of the bench structures is completed. These activities are currently scheduled to begin on March 6 and April 3, respectively.

Bench Design:The solid model design of the spectrograph bench has been rescheduled to begin February 3 and finish on March 6.The OIWFS bench is scheduled to be completed on February 3.Rescheduling of this work has caused slipping the Pre-Fabrication Review date to May 11.
