GNIRS PROGRESS REPORT

September 22 – October 19, 2001

           Accomplishments / Status

Summary:  82% of the work from the Restart Review to delivery has been completed.

The work during this period included hosting a Quarterly Review on October 5th. In addition to the review, significant progress was made on mechanical design of the radiation shields and the vendor fabrication of the Bulkhead Assembly and Dewar Shells. Except for the Focus Assembly, all mechanisms have completed fabrication. Grating and Prism Turret mechanism testing is underway.

An update to the Envelope Waiver, submitted to Gemini last month, has been approved.

A problem with the OIWFS Gimbal Mirror assembly has stopped work on the integration of the WFS components onto the bench. We are waiting for Gemini direction on how to proceed. Work on the WFS electronics and software checkout is proceeding and we have successfully tested the mux readout.

The two replica mirrors and the final camera lens are still in fabrication. All other optics are received. Two camera barrels are still in fabrication, but test and alignment of the other two camera barrels are ready to start as soon as the test fixture is completed.

A design modification to the Bulkhead Assembly was required to compensate for a vendor fabrication error. This involved the design of a new support ring, which will permanently install on the Bulkhead Assembly. Leak testing of the entire dewar assembly is scheduled for late November.

Change orders for delivery of GNIRS to Chile, including Testing, Training, and Commissioning, and for the Differential Pressure Switch, are in process.

Next Milestone:
The next major project milestone is the completion of Bulkhead Assembly and Dewar Shell fabrication and leak test in November.

This table reflects planned and actual charges to the project as of October 19, 2001.  We have spent $1,220,474 in capital to date.

Project Management: (74% complete)

The project plan may be viewed on the GNIRS web site at: http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/ under Management, Planning. The current scheduled delivery date of the GNIRS instrument is September 25, 2002.

Systems Engineering: (100% of planned work)

The main focus has been support of design updates, mechanism assembly and warm test, and preparation of the Test Plan for Acceptance Testing, Delivery to Chile, Training and Commissioning.  The Test Plan has been submitted to Gemini for approval.

Mechanical Design, Fabrication, Assembly and Test: (90% overall)

The major activity in this work package has been a design modification to the Bulkhead assembly, 3D and 2D design of radiation shields, and fabrication.

Mechanisms: (93% complete overall).  The Focus Mechanism is the only mechanism assembly still in fabrication. Most mechanisms are essentially ready for test. Testing is underway for the Grating and Prism turrets and the Slit Slide is in the final stages of rework. The IFU mass models have been fabricated and installed. The Acquisition Mirror mechanism is waiting for the mirror, and two camera barrels are in fabrication.

              Problems / Solutions

A modification to the Bulkhead Assembly was required due to a vendor error in fabrication.  This has been accomplished and incorporated into the design and fabrication of the assembly.  No schedule delay resulted.

The OIWFS Gimbal Mirror assembly has an internal problem that has been referred to Gemini for resolution.  The GNIRS team is prepared to effect repair of the assembly, but can do so only as directed by Gemini.

There are two Change Orders outstanding which need to be completed and submitted to Gemini:

·        Change Order for delivery of GNIRS to Chile

·        Change Order revision for the Differential Pressure Switch

These CO’s will be completed and submitted to the USGPO by mid-November, 2001.

             Key Personnel

Ed Hileman, SR. Mechanical Engineer and a Design Draftsman, scheduled for release from GNIRS on November 1st, have been extended on the project until the Radiation Shields are in fabrication.

Dale Circle, Sr. Designer, is scheduled to leave the project on December 31st.
