Description of Planned GNIRS Reviews
1. GNIRS Pre-Fabrication Review
Date of review: May 11-12, 2000
The purpose of the GNIRS Pre-Fabrication Review is to demonstrate to our customer, Gemini, that the design approach of the instrument critical assemblies (optical benches and mechanisms) are sound, and will meet the basic requirements of the FPRD.
As previously agreed to by Gemini, this will be a technical review focusing primarily on the solid models of the optical bench assemblies, results of the gravity deflection/flexure and thermal analyses, and the results of our prototype risk reduction effort. We also plan to present the results of our cold motor testing, the software plan, an overview of schedule progress, plans for fabrication, and identification of pertinent milestones.
2. GNIRS Mid-Fabrication Review
Date of Review: 1st quarter FY 2001
The purpose of the GNIRS Mid-Fabrication Review is to provide our customer Gemini a mid-course status update on the design, fabrication, and test of the work in progress, and to assess the probability of starting integration on schedule.
This review is scheduled to occur 9 to 12 months after the Pre-Fabrication Review, which occurs in May 2000. Nearly all fabrication on the project takes place over the course of the 13 months following the Pre-Fab Review.
3. GNIRS Assembly/Design Reviews.
Number of Reviews: 25 (approximate)
These reviews are to be held for each major assembly prior to going forward into fabrication. These reviews are termed ‘Fabrication Readiness Review’ on the project schedule. The purpose of the review is perform a final check on the item being released to fab, verify drawing correctness, and perform a final sign-off by engineering, systems, and project.
These reviews are intended to be low-level, informal, and basically in-house. However, Gemini will be notified is invited to attend, and will usually be represented by the USGP.
4. Instrument Reviews
Frequency of Reviews: Monthly
This is a video-conference review meeting with USGP and the IGPO in which GNIRS, along with other Gemini instrumentation projects is reviewed. The basis of the review for GNIRS is a monthly report submitted to the USGP. This report discusses the following:
- Accomplishments/Status
o Summary information
o Next milestone(s)
o Earned value (BCWS, BCWP, ACWP, SPI, CPI)
o Recent progress
§ Project management (schedule)
§ Systems engineering
§ Mechanical design and fabrication
§ Electronics design
§ Software development
§ procurement
- Problems/Solutions
- Key Personnel
5. Quarterly Reviews
Frequency of Reviews: Quarterly, or as called by the USGP
The goal of this review is to evaluate the GNIRS instrument project progress in a number of different areas, with emphasis on management and high level concerns. Specifically, the USGP uses this review as a formal mechanism to determine whether the project is on track with respect to budget and schedule, and to identify potential problems before they significantly impact progress.
The review is divided into the following areas of concern:
- major findings
- project summary
- project management
- systems engineering
- optics design/fabrication
- mechanical design/fabrication
- electronics design/fabrication
- software design/fabrication
- subsystem integration
- systems integration
- test and checkout
- documentation and training
- other activities
