This is the letter WIYN observing experiment PIs receive when it seems likely that their Imager program will be initiated in 4 - 6 weeks.
Proposal ID: ##PROG_ID
Program Title: ##PROG_TITLE
PI: ##PROG_PI
PI E-mail address: ##PI_EMAIL
Dear Dr. ##PI_LASTNAME:
Congratulations on your successful Imager WIYN queue observing proposal.
The earliest date when we can observe the targets listed below for your
program will be ##PROG_START_DATE. This prediction is based on a
combination of your TAC grade, current WIYN program queue progress,
and the celestial coordinates of your program targets.
We remind you that approved WIYN queue programs fall into two priority
classes: "highest" priority and "best effort". Please refer to the
TAC results letter you received via regular mail to determine the priority
of your program. If your program falls in the "best effort" class,
you should be aware that the chances that your program will be initiated
and completed are significantly lower than if you are in the "highest"
priority class.
If you wish, you may now submit:
(1) a WIYNQ form (OPTIONAL)
(2) finding charts (OPTIONAL)
Submission of these files is OPTIONAL. If we do not receive updated
information, we will use the Target Tables you submitted with your
original application. If you do wish to submit revised information,
please do so by ##DUE_DATE, using the methods described below.
Please read the rest of this notice CAREFULLY. It discusses the
following topics:
1. Instructions for Submitting a WIYNQ Form
2. Instructions for Submitting Optional Finding Charts
3. The NOAO WIYN Observing Program Web Site
4. List of Important E-mail Addresses
5. Final Remarks
1. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING THE REVISED WIYNQ FORM
For whatever reason, you may wish to submit a WIYNQ form or a revised
WIYNQ form. Please remember this is OPTIONAL.
Note that in many instances, you will just be able to transfer
("cut-and-paste") the information on your original WIYNQ form to
any revised WIYNQ form you submit during the course of a semester.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that you specify as precisely as possible a PER
EXPOSURE data quality figure-of-merit, i.e., a quantitative measure of
whether an individual exposure has met your technical goal. Your
figure-of-merit might be one of the following:
(1) S/N per exposure of your selected objects in your target
field,
(2) S/N per exposure per square arcsec at some radius,
OR your figure-of-merit might be something else entirely. Please be
specific.
Please read the World Wide Web (WWW; see the following section) pages
concerning the WIYN Imager, default Imager operation and calibration
procedures, and how your data will be assessed as it is acquired before
preparing your revised form and finalizing your figure-of-merit.
The WIYNQ LaTeX form should be e-mailed to "wiynq-submit@noao.edu".
"wiynq-submit@noao.edu". The e-mail "Subject" line should read:
"S97 KP##PROG_NUMBER WIYNQ form"
We will acknowledge the receipt of your form.
2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING OPTIONAL FINDING CHARTS
The Imager field-of-view (FOV) is 6.8 x 6.8 arcmins, the all-sky
pointing accuracy of the telescope is 10 arcsecs RMS, and the
telescope offsetting accuracy is less than 1 arcsec RMS. Therefore, if
you supplied us good coordinates, your target objects will be in the
Imager FOV.
Nevertheless, you may wish to send us finding charts to assist us in
identifying your program objects, especially if their spatial
resolution or S/N need to be carefully checked.
Submitting finding charts is OPTIONAL. Nevertheless, we ENCOURAGE you
to submit finding charts if possible.
You may submit finding charts in two (2) ways:
(1) Send Postscript files to "wiynq-submit@noao.edu". In the "Subject"
line of your e-mail message, please include the following line:
"S97 KP##PROG_NUMBER OBJID Postscript finding chart"
where OBJID should correspond to the OBJID you assign each field on
your *revised* WIYNQ form.
(2) Send two (2) hardcopies to:
WIYN Queue Observing Experiment
NOAO/KPNO
950 N. Cherry Ave
P.O. Box 26732
Tucson, AZ 85726-6732
Attn: Di Harmer
Questions about submitting finding charts should be e-mailed to
"wiynq@noao.edu".
3. THE NOAO WIYN OBSERVING PROGRAM WEB SITE
We regularly post queue progress reports to our Web site:
http://www.noao.edu/wiyn/obsprog/
We try to update this information after every night assigned to queue
observing at WIYN. This site also contains a variety of other
information about the NOAO WIYN Observing program. In particular,
information about the WIYN Imager and the default operation and calibration
procedures can be found at
http://www.noao.edu/wiyn/obsprog/proginfo/ImagerInfo.html
Take some time to become familiar with our Web site.
4. LIST OF IMPORTANT E-MAIL ADDRESS
wiynq-submit@noao.edu Submit your revised WIYNQ form and
the optional Postscript finding
charts HERE.
wiynq@noao.edu Submit all other questions about
the WIYN queue observing program HERE.
wiynq@noao.edu IF ALL ELSE FAILS, contact Paul Smith,
the WIYN Queue Scientist, and
ASK FOR HELP.
5. FINAL REMARKS
We invite your comments on any aspect of the program. It is only
through your feedback that we will learn to serve our community in the
most fruitful manner.
On behalf of the entire WIYN queue team, thanks for your cooperation
and good luck.
