ODI CoDR Charge to the Review Panel

The panel is asked to advise Richard Green, on behalf of the WIYN Consortium, on the overall feasibility of the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI), with specific attention to the following questions in each of the sections noted below:

  1. Do the proposed concept designs meet the science and technical requirements? And, are there alternative proven designs that should be considered?
  2. Are the cost estimates, schedule, and management structure consistent with the goals and scope of the project?
  3. Where are the major areas of risk to cost and schedule? And, are any of the designs sufficiently risk-free to begin long lead-time procurements (e.g., optics)?
  4. Can you offer any recommendations for risk mitigation, cost reduction, or schedule compression?
  5. Is the operations plan sufficiently versatile to implement both large surveys and short PI-class observing programs?

Technical sections to consider:

  1. Detectors
  2. Controllers
  3. Optics (corrector, atmospheric dispersion compensator)
  4. Filters and filter exchange mechanism
  5. Shutter
  6. Cryostat and cooling system
  7. Data handling system, including user interface, camera control, and reduction pipeline
  8. Interface to the existing telescope system (mechanical, software, facility)
