50th Anniversary Planning Workspace

Timeline

A timeline for celebrations from March 2008 - March 2010 marks 50 years from 2 key milestones.

1958 March 1 - NSF announced that Kitt Peak would be the site of the national observatory.
1958 October 24 - Congress approved the lease agreement with the Tohono O'odham.
1959 June 1 - Arlo Landolt was the first, official, guest observer on Kitt Peak.
1960 February - The 0.9 m telescope was the first major telescope completed on Kitt Peak.
1960 March 15 - KPNO was dedicated.
1960 March - Construction began on the solar telescope.
