Title: A GPI Investigation of Clouds and Chemistry in Planets Orbiting HR 8799

Abstract: We propose Y, J, and K2 (1, 1.25, and 2.2 micron) imaging/spectroscopy of HR 8799 cde with the Gemini Planet Imager, complementing existing/planned GPI campaign observations at H and K1. Based on GPI performance estimates and our own GPI data reductions, our program should yield high SNR photometry and moderate SNR spectra of HR 8799 cde at J, high SNR spectra of HR 8799 cde at K2, and detections/stringent upper limits of HR 8799 cd at Y band. These data will provide vastly-improved constraints on the presence of clouds (from Y/J data) and chemistry (K2), especially for d and e. Combining these data with additional HR 8799 cde data unique to our group, we will better constrain the planets' atmospheric properties (e.g. Teff). Finally, our program will show whether or not super-Jovian planets of the same luminosity/mass (HR 8799 cde) have dissimilar spectra and thus show evidence for chemical heterogeneity.
