Title: Kinematically Distinct Stellar Populations in a Globular Cluster

Abstract: We propose to use the Goodman Spectrograph in MOS mode to measure the line-of-sight velocities of ~600 stars located in the globular cluster (GC) M15. We have recently detected kinematically distinct stellar populations in this cluster using state-of-the-art HST proper motions, adding further support to the existence of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. Our proposed observations will provide the vital missing piece of information on the kinematics of M15: its internal rotation, which cannot be measured using proper motion observations, and which conveys the most direct kinematic evidence of multiple episodes of star formation within GCs. Coupling line-of-sight velocities to proper motions will allow us to construct a fully 3D picture of the internal dynamics of M15 separately for the distinct populations, unveiling the origin of the cluster and of its stellar populations, and in turn, placing important constraints on the connection between the Milky Way halo and its GC system.
