Title: The halos of isolated elliptical galaxies
Abstract: The current paradigm of galaxy formation states that galaxies go through a fast growth from z~2 due to minor mergers that deposit stars primordially into the galaxies halos. Galaxies in low-density environments would then experience a restrained phase of growth given their poor merger histories, with a clear signature in the shape of their outer luminosity profiles. We propose deep imaging of 6-8 isolated ellipticals using WIYN 0.9m/HDI that will provide surface brightness profiles down to (mu)_V~29-30. The shape of the luminosity profiles at these faint magnitudes provides a conceptually simple, but observationally challenging, test for the environmental influence of the halos growth.
