Title: On the importance of the AGB phase in Galaxy Evolution

Abstract: We propose to use GNIRS in cross-dispersed mode to obtain spectra of the entire infrared window in a sample of post-starburst galaxies. These should show the signature of TP-AGB (thermally pulsing AGB) stars which are expected to be abundant in an intermediate-age population. Since Miras will produce mainly features in the YJ bandpasses and Carbon stars will be more prominent in HK, we need to sample the whole of the 1.0-2.5 micron window. This will test whether AGB stars can mimic the presence of old and massive galaxies at high redshift.
