Title: Beyond CNO: Phosphorus and Chlorine in the Galactic Disk

Abstract: We propose to determine the abundances of phosphorus and chlorine in the Milky Way's thin disk using Phoenix on the Mayall 4-m telescope. Knowledge of light element abundances helps to constrain and guide theoretical models of stellar evolution and galactic chemical evolution, as summarized by Nomoto et al. (2013). The elements phosphorus and chlorine are thought to be produced in supernovae, but their abundances are virtually unknown in stars. Phosphorus abundances will be determined in solar-type dwarfs in the local thin disk using two well-placed lines at 1.06 microns. The determination of the abundance of chlorine makes use of HCl molecular features at 3.8 microns. Results will be compared with known abundances of other elements to trace sources contributing to galactic chemical evolution
